Ollama: run an LLM locally in one command
1 min readAI · Ollama · Tools0 views
Want GPT-class help on your laptop without an API key, an account, or a byte leaving your machine? Ollama is the answer the ecosystem converged on: curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh, ollama pull llama3.1, ollama run llama3.1 — done. The model library wraps Qwen, Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, Gemma and hundreds more, quantized for real hardware.
Why it matters
- Data never leaves the machine — drafts, client code, private notes: all local.
- Zero marginal cost — batch thousands of calls: free after hardware.
- A real REST API —
curl localhost:11434/api/generate(or chat) — scripts, cron jobs, RAG pipelines, all on-device. - Surprising quality at small sizes — a Q5 8–32B model on a decent GPU is genuinely useful for daily tasks.
The honest limits
- It needs memory — 7B models run fine on CPU slowly; 32B+ wants real VRAM; 70B wants serious hardware or quantization trade-offs.
- Not frontier-agentic — multi-step tool use still favors Claude/GPT-class paid models.
- You own the ops — updates, disk, GPU drivers, context limits (num_ctx), system prompt steering — all yours to configure.
Real-world sweet spots
- Private RAG over your own docs — embeddings, retrieval, no cloud.
- CI/cron jobs that need cheap batch judgment (tagging, summarizing, triaging).
- Learning/playing — the fastest way to build intuition about prompts, context and temperature.
- Offline/air-gapped work — the one environment cloud APIs can't touch.
If Ollama is the only local-AI thing you ever install, you're already ahead. Pair it with a small RAG script and you've got a private assistant that doesn't bill you. Repository: github.com/ollama/ollama.
