GitHub Trending: Nutlope/hallmark — the anti-AI-slop design skill

You know the look: Inter for everything, purple-to-blue gradient, a rounded-square icon above every heading, gray text on a tinted background. Nutlope/hallmark exists because agents default to exactly that, and because the internet is getting full of it. It's a design skill for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode — by Together AI — that builds pages against a hard floor and refuses to look machine-made. 48,310 stars, 7,622 of them this week.
What it actually does
- Fifty themes, each a material — paper, type, colour, surfaces, components, texture — with a picture of a finished page. A build deals three that fit the prompt and lays the page out in one of them.
- Floor / Reflex / Finish gates. The Floor (contrast, focus, reduced-motion, invented facts, broken mobile) never ships. Reflex gates are the defaults agents fall into; a build with a reason may overrule one, on the record. Finish checks never block.
- sloplint — a linter that inspects the rendered page at eight widths and flags the tells: eyebrow-above-every-heading, tracked-capital labels, one coloured word in a headline, empty frames, missing mobile layouts.
- Real photographs — 755 openly licensed images from Wikimedia Commons, picked per subject and credited on the page. No Unsplash/Pexels — their terms bar AI tools from picking images.
- Redesign and audit modes —
/hallmark redesign <path>rebuilds a page keeping content and wiring;/hallmark audit <path>only reports.
Why it's trending this week
Design is where agents are weakest and where users notice fastest. Everyone shipping with an agent right now has felt the gap between 'it works' and 'it looks like a person made it'. Hallmark is the most opinionated, best-tooled answer on GitHub this week — and it's refreshingly open about what it is: a skill, a linter, and a photo licence spreadsheet, not magic.
Who it's for
- Indie hackers and agencies shipping agent-built landing pages that currently smell like AI.
- Design engineers who want a lint pass for 'looks machine-made' in their loop.
- Anyone redesigning an existing page without losing its content or behaviour.
Worth knowing before you try it
- Install:
npx skills add nutlope/hallmark -g(Node 18+);-ginstalls for every project — leave it off for the current one. - The browser checks (
sloplint --render) needpuppeteer-coreand Chrome; the static checks work without them. - MIT licence. Read the Floor rules before you let it touch production — the gate is only as good as the reviewer you bring to it.
This site's hero and sections were built by hand with the opposite philosophy — constraints you can read in the source. Hallmark is the same constraint system, enforced by an agent. Repository: github.com/Nutlope/hallmark.
